Works

pohang steelworks

Constructed in four phases between April 1970 and February 1981 along Korea's southeast coast, the nation's first integrated steelworks has produced 230 milion tons of pig iron Through March 2004-e nough to build some 250 million compact cars.

With value-added steel grades currently accounting for 57.7% of overall production, we are now nearing commercialization of our next-generation eco-friendly FINEX¢ç ironmaking process here, a technology that will significantly sharpen our competitive edge in the global steel market in the years and decades to come

Founded back in 1968 with virtually no capital, technology, or experience, POSCO has risen to the top of the global steel industry in just three decades. POSCO produces some 28 million tons of steel products each year, enough to produce about 100,000 compact cars a day. Today, we ship those products to over 60 countries around the globe, satisfying some of the world's most quality-sensitive manufactures.

Based at the Pohang Works, our headquarters uses state-of-the-art information systems to handle all administrative and accounting tasks as well as coordinate orders, production, and shipments with both steelworks.

POSCO's highly automated steelworks in the Korean port cities of Pohang and Gwangyang form a synergistic production network that provides the foundation for our international competitiveness.

Built between 1968 and 1983, the 899-hectare Pohang Works specializes in small-lot production of a broad range of products, including hot rolled coil and cold rolled sheet, plate, wire rod, electrical steel, and stainless steel. In 2006, crude steel output was 12.6 million tons.

gwangyang steelworks

Constructed in four phases between September 1982 and October 1992 on land Korea's southeast coast, the nation's second integrated steelworks is among the world¡¯s most advanced. Today, as we focus on manufacturing automotive steel, high-strength structure steel, API line pip steel, and other strategic product categories, the Gwangyang Works is rapidly emerging as the single-source supplier of choice for automakers in Korea and throughout Asia.

Even before the final phase of the Pohang Works was completed, POSCO was hard at work planning a second steelworks that would catapult it from being Korea's largest steelmaker to the world's largest.

Built between 1985 and 1992 on Korea's south coast almost entirely on land reclaimed from the sea, the 1,441-hectare Gwangyang Works focuses on mass-production of a limited number of high-demand products such as hot and cold rolled sheet.

The synergy created by the complementary production systems of the two steelworks gives POSCO the breadth of products and economies of scale that now enable it to lead the global steel industry. In 2006, crude steel output was 17.4 million tons, the top figure in the global industry for a single steelworks.
