Since it announced the ethical standards, POSCO has built global practice systems and infrastructure commonly used in the international community and taken all the necessary measures to operate and apply the systems.
Baroman, the ethical management character
On the occasion of the 2nd anniversary of the proclamation of ethical standards, ideas were collected from employees; the result was the birth of “Baroman,” a compound word consisting of “Baroda” of the olden days meaning “Will act honestly and rightfully anytime, anywhere with an upright view of values” and “POSCO man.” Baroman signifies POSCO’s strong intention to practice corporate ethics.
The character is used to deliver POSCO’s ethical management in a user-friendlier and more effective way through in-house screens or customer rooms, ethics popup windows, personal name cards, and training materials.
“Ethics popup windows” on Ethics Day
The directors and employees of POSCO begin their day by connecting to the company Intranet to view for approximately once a week on the average the ethics practice messages produced in animation.
The “ethics popup window” used by POSCO since December 2003 is the company’s unique and specialized practice activity that promotes ethics mindset among employees by introducing common senses of ethics or ethics practice messages, advising them of related regulations, and offering dilemma case quizzes. It has also been introduced to well-known foreign enterprises, earning favorable responses.
Publishing Ethics Digest, the ethics newsletter
As an online newsletter designed to provide information to the corporate ethics practice leader of each department and play the role of an exchange plaza, Ethics Digest was first published on July 27, 2006. It provides information, issues, trends, and training materials related to ethics to corporate ethics practice leaders, thereby contributing greatly to the establishment of an open communication plaza by reflecting the voices of practice leaders.
POSCO newspaper’s ethics column
The Corporate Ethics Practice Bureau periodically publishes articles serially in the ethics column of the POSCO newspaper. The column gives commentaries on the ethics practice dilemma cases and excellent ethical management cases, POSCO’s ethical management-related systems and the Practice Guideline. It enhances the ethics practice mindset of directors or employees, playing the important role of informing them of POSCO’s ethics practice internally and externally.
Other activities designed to institutionalize the ethical corporate culture
Since the ethical corporate culture takes root through the continued interest and participation of directors or employees, the Corporate Ethics Practice Bureau holds in-house competitions and ethics puzzle games whenever deemed necessary to induce employees’ participation. Even the in-house PC screensaver, corporate ethics motto “Taking Pride in Clean POSCO,” and “Baroman” character were born from the idea proposed by employees.
The award-winning ethical sayings and slogans at in-house competitions and the four-line poem created by corporate ethics practice leaders are introduced on the in-house elevator screen as part of efforts to share employees’ intention to practice ethics. Furthermore, all award-winning works are used in a variety of forms in company notebooks, customer rooms, and conference rooms to enhance employees’ practice mindset continuously.
As explained above, employees consistently make practicing ethics a habit by having access to details related to the practice of ethics anytime, anywhere.
